Haryana Tourism Department has established an Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition at Kurukshetra with the investment of Rs 11.44 crore for training the young boys and girls who choose tourism industry as their career. Applications for admission were invited for the first academic session, which would commence on July21. |

Four Seasons in Mumbai opens |
The first Four Season Hotel in India has opened in Mumbai. It is a 33-storey tower having 202 rooms and suites, two restaurants, 500 square metres of business space and a two-storey spa. According to Armando Kraenzlin, General Manager of the hotel, “It’s a real privilege to be planting the Four Seasons flag in India. Mumbai is a big opening for the group and the Hotel is in an exciting part of town. It sets new standards in the city for luxury and service and is sure to challenge many Western preconceptions of what India has to offer.” The spa will not open with the rest of the hotel, but later this year, when it unveils its eight treatment rooms offering Ayurvedic treatments as well as massage from various traditions. Award for Raj Palace’s Durbar Mahal |
The Raj Palace’s Durbar Mahal Suite, a luxury heritage hotel, is voted as Asia’s leading suite at the travel industry Oscars. The trophy was received by Raj Palace on June 19 at a ceremony in Shanghai. The voting was conducted among 1,67,000 travel professional worldwide, including 1,10,000 travel agents. The Durbar Mahal suite is still the perfect abode for modern day maharajas. Its luxurious ornamentation includes gold-leafed painted walls, stucco and mirror work with overhanging jharokas. The furniture is all in gold and silver. The most attractive part of the suite is a private museum that displays the old throne and bolsters of Thakur Mohan Singh, who had built the palace in 1727. Princess Jayendra Kumari, in 1995, decided to restore the palace into a luxury heritage hotel. The Raj Palace is the winner of the Best Heritage Hotel in India at the National Tourism Award 2007 and is the only palace hotel in India to make it to the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, an unsurpassed collection of over 440 hotels spanning more than 70 countries.

| Dan Hotels plans to enter India |
Dan Hotels Corporation Ltd, a hotel major in Israel, plans to acquire land to develop its first property in India. The company is in the process of purchasing the site for the property and waiting for the required approvals. It intends to establish a 250-room business hotel in a central location. Investment including the purchase of the land and building of the hotel is estimated at $50 million. Dan Hotels said that any agreement would be subject to certain conditions such as obtaining of permits and zoning the site for a hotel. |
| Landmark Group to develop 12 projects |
Landmark Group will be developing 12 properties in the next 4 years with an investment of over Rs 4,000 crore. The major focus of the group will remain in the northern region. “Currently our 12 projects are undergoing in North India, which will be completed in the next 3-4 years. We will be investing about one billion dollar in developing these projects,” Landmark Group Director Amit Kumar told. The company would fund the projects through internal accruals and raisings from private equities. The group has planned to develop three hotels, two five star and one budget hotel in the next three years, which could entail an investment of about Rs 700 crore. Landmark Group is developing a 3,000-room five star hotel in Dharuhera and a budget hotel in Gurgaon with about 120 rooms. The other five star hotel would come up at Bawal in Haryana, Kumar said. “We will invest about Rs 700 crore in three hotels. Hopefully, this figure will go up as we are planning to develop two more hotels in the coming years,” he said. |
| Sarovar to sign 8-hotel deal with Phoenix JV |
Sarovar Hotels & Resorts is setting up a joint venture with Phoenix Hospitality and Entertainment World Developers (EWDPL) to develop 8 new hotels. The company already has a tie-up with Vipul Hospitality to develop five properties. According to Ajay Bakaya, executive director, Sarovar Hotels & Resorts, these hotels will be set up at tier-II locations - Raipur, Udaipur, Nanded, Jabalpur, Chandigarh, Indore, Ujjain and Bhilai. There is a plan to develop Mall-o-tel at few locations. Sarovar Hotels & Resorts will manage, market and provide reservation systems for these properties across India for 15-20 years, It would also guide in the design process, says Bakaya. Phoenix, on its part, has the option to choose from Sarovar’s portfolio of Premier, Portico and Hometel brands for these hotels as well as the Park Plaza and Park Inn brands that Sarovar represents in India. Many of these locations do not have any quality hotels and with these properties, Sarovar and Phoenix would gain a first-mover advantage in these markets. Since Sarovar itself has an aggressive expansion plan across India, the two are likely to have a non-compete agreement within the same brand in the city. next..
